CHIP Home Repair Awards

Lorain County – The Lorain County Board of Commissioners approved at this morning’s meeting a contract to Green Home Solutions for home repairs in the amount of $5,800, with a contingency for unforeseen conditions of $580, to assist a homeowner in Columbia Station, a contract to KMU Trucking & Excavating for home repairs in the amount of $14,500, with a contingency for unforeseen conditions of $1,450, to assist a homeowner in Elyria Township, and a contract to JenMet Construction for home repairs in the amount of $43,095, with a contingency for unforeseen conditions of $4,300, to assist a homeowner in Kipton.

These projects are 100% funded through a Community Housing Impact Program (CHIP) grant that the County applied for and received in 2016. Lorain County, in partnership with the cities of Oberlin and Sheffield Lake, applied for and was awarded over $1.1 million dollars. These funds are used to maintain homeownership, preserve affordable housing, and protect and stabilize neighborhoods. Funds are also used for Fair Housing program, Tenant-Based Rental Assistance through Lorain Metropolitan Housing Authority and the administration of the program.

The CHIP Program Year 2016 funds are fully committed to projects. The County plans on applying for funding in 2018. The grants are on a two-year cycle, meaning the County cannot apply again until the 2018 Program Year. The CHIP funds can be used to preserve housing in all Lorain County communities except for Lorain, Elyria, and Vermilion, which operate their own programs.

Contractors wishing to be able to participate in bidding on projects need to contact Community Development at (440) 328-2322. There is approximately $400,000 plus remaining to be bid out.
